This morning on the F train to work, I was pleasantly surprised to look up and see the featured work of my fave Béatrice Coron. Apparently the poster has been around since 2009, but I don’t think I’ve seen it yet. I think it’s going to be a good day!

Wednesday night’s Aparment Therapy MeetUp featured artist and rug designer, Amy Helfand. Her work stands out to me for its unusual designs and gorgeous colors. The color pallets are unique and aesthetically pleasing – a nice use of complementary colors and bold choices.

Her story is interesting, an artist turned rug designer, Amy never intended to make rugs. She started making collages from magazines as a creative outlet and eventually turned the designs into digital creations and then rugs. She works with manufactures in Nepal, all members of Good Weave an organization dedicated to ending child labor in the carpet industry.

After a weekend of high temperatures only in the 20s, I’m getting a little sick of layering my clothing! New York artist Derick Melander’s installation work reminds us how much waste we create through textiles. New Yorkers create 3,615 pounds of textile waste every 5 minutes.

The piece above, “The Ocean is the Underlying Basis for Every Wave” is created by stacking used clothing.

“As clothing wears, fades, stains and stretches it becomes an intimate record of our physical presence. It traces the edge of the body, defining the boundary between the individual and the outside world.”

The Anthropologie catalog is always a pleasant surprise when it arrives in my mailbox. But what do with it after? I made this headboard outline for my bed by cutting and folding the pages into pinwheels and connecting them with paper ribbon.

A year ago today I moved to New York City. What a wild year it has been… From navigating the subway to starting an internet company – it really has flown by. I look forward to an even better year in 2010.

This was a great week for design. I got out to two different design events. On Wednesday, I attended the Meet-up for Apartment Therapy at Knoll featuring John Robshaw. It was great to hear him talk about his work and exploration of wood block textiles in India.

Thursday brought even more fun. The Designer Pages Meet-up took place at Heller. Speakers included Zachary Feltoon of David Zachary, Alan Heller and Barbara Blue of Heller, and Massimo Vignelli, founder of Vignelli Associates. Massimo was the highlight. His discussion of design was humorous, captivating, and inspiring all at once! Points taken from his talk:

• Vision and determination are most important for designers
• Don’t give people what they want, give them what they need
• On collaboration (with his wife) – one must share a cultural platform

The excitement of the night (for me at least) was when I WON the drawing for a Bellini Chair! I couldn’t be more excited. I haven’t picked it up yet, but I am really looking forward to having it in my new apartment. This year is off to a good start.
